Academic Life Coaching goes beyond youth mentoring or counseling by helping students understand how best to learn at school, be proactive, and exercise personal leadership, all by honing the strengths and skills they already have. Through coaching, students will gain enhanced self-awareness, self-control, and a greater sense of self-confidence. These skills will allow them to apply themselves in more meaningful ways, impacting their future exponentially. Learning these skills helps students avoid common pitfalls and can drastically influence the upward trajectory of personal fulfillment and success.
The Academic Life Coaching Program is designed to train coaches who want to help students thrive and develop positive life skills. Throughout the program, coaches will learn the methods and concepts necessary for the growth and development of their student clients.
One of the critical elements of Academic Life Coaching is its ability to help students build a foundation for academic success. In the Academic Life Coaching Program, coaches will learn how to help students discover their learning styles, cultivate emotional intelligence, and design useful study skills. With these new skills, students will continue to gain confidence in themselves and their decision-making capabilities, building positive habits and improving working memory. Coaches will also work with students to create improved systems to handle stress, grades, and college or career readiness.
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) has high standards for coaching programs, and at the center of these standards are the ICF’s core competencies. These competencies outline the skills and attributes required to become a successful coach. Some of these competencies include helping students take sustainable steps toward meaningful goals, identifying and changing problematic perspectives, and aligning their values with their actions. Additionally, coaches are trained on the ethics of coaching and how to develop and maintain a consistent coaching presence with their students.
Leadership and communication are crucial elements in a student’s ability to succeed. Throughout the Academic Life Coaching Program, coaches will learn how to work with students to develop their personal leadership style and build powerful communication skills. Coaches will help students through a process of formulating effective mission statements and designing personal leadership projects. By intentionally developing meaningful opportunities to step into leadership roles, coaches can help students create positive change in their peer groups, classrooms, families, and communities.
